PREV.IA Project: Prevention of occupational hazards through artificial intelligence
A hard hat ‘warns’ of a high ambient temperature so that the operator stops working.
At the same time, an acoustic signal warns that stirring the earth in a certain place may endanger nearby employees on the construction site.
These are two examples of how technology can help prevent misfortunes on the job.
The PREVI.IA project analyzes and detects patterns in the prevention of occupational hazards and makes notifications whenever the system perceives risky behavior. All this is done by applying an artificial intelligence layer to the video transmission in real time.
The main objective of the project was to test whether the use of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) could improve agility, implementation costs, accuracy and results in occupational risk prevention. All compared to the use of other technologies already proven for the same purpose, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), which, despite being very accurate, have high costs for companies.
In other words, the aim was to replace sensors with new, cheaper solutions based on artificial intelligence.

The process
PREVI.IA validates one of the branches of the aforementioned artificial intelligence, machine learning, as a machine learning technique based on the extraction of data from images to detect patterns and apply the result in the prevention of occupational hazards.
The movement of workers was tested in, for example, areas where it is not possible to place beacons, where earthworks are being carried out or where lines are being laid. In this case, the use of helmets and safe footpaths can be detected in the vicinity of construction sites and/or hazardous and restricted areas within the field of construction and industry.
The proposed solution allows the management of an automatic alert system that notifies in real time dangerous situations. In a second phase of the project, the risk behavior is predicted before it takes place.
Results
- In less explored environments, such as industry or construction, workplace accidents can be prevented.
- The use of a video camera to monitor the number of people and locate them in hazardous areas.
- It detects the mandatory use of protective measures, which is a giant leap towards employee safety.
We are ready for new challenges
