Red-Point: The app transforming rock climbing with .NET MAUI, Evergine and Azure
Rock climbing has experienced significant global growth, increasing the need for accurate, up-to-date and easily accessible information about routes, terrain and access points. Technology has become a key driver in improving safety, reducing risks and offering climbers a clearer understanding of their environment before beginning any ascent.
In this context, Alpha Outdoors set out to digitalise climbing areas around the world and deliver an advanced visual experience even in remote locations. Their goal was to replace outdated physical guidebooks with a modern solution based on real-time data, GPS navigation and high-fidelity 3D models that empower climbers to plan and move confidently.
The challenge for Alpha Outdoors was to develop a solution capable of transforming thousands of drone-captured images into accurate 3D models, while delivering them through a fast, reliable and offline-ready mobile application. The platform needed to combine GPS navigation, topographic data and real-time 3D visualisation within a secure, scalable architecture that maintained exceptional performance on mobile devices.
The digitalisation process behind Red-Point
To bring Red-Point to life, we developed a complete architecture based on .NET MAUI, Evergine and Azure services, enabling high-fidelity 3D models, GPS navigation and offline content.
The workflow begins with data capture through drones, iPhones and LiDAR devices. Thousands of images are processed using advanced photogrammetry techniques to produce highly accurate 3D meshes and textures.
The overall solution was built with a strong Big Data and graphics-processing approach, combining cloud technologies with a powerful native .NET 3D engine. Custom services were created for ingestion, compression, caching, synchronisation and delivery of 3D assets, allowing climbers to access complex terrain information quickly, smoothly and securely—regardless of location.
Results
- Digitalisation of more than 1,200 climbing areas using high-precision 3D modelling.
- Gained over 10,000 users in the first weeks after launch.
- Featured among the top apps in its category on the App Store.
- Outstanding performance on mobile devices thanks to the synergy of .NET MAUI and Evergine.
- Fully functional offline access for use in remote areas with no connectivity.
- Significantly reduced loading times through intelligent compression, caching and texture optimisation.
- A smoother, safer and visually enhanced experience for the climbing community.
