    Intro

We find ourselves in an increasingly data-driven business environment and a time when the ability to monitor, diagnose, and optimize every component of the analytics ecosystem is more than a competitive advantage; it is a necessity.

Microsoft Fabric, the unified analytics and data platform in the cloud, not only integrates powerful processing and visualization tools but also incorporates a robust monitoring solution that redefines the way organizations manage their data performance and governance. Read on, as we explore how this functionality can be frictionlessly integrated into existing workflows, what tangible benefits it brings, and why now is the ideal time to integrate it into your corporate data strategy.

    Fabric Monitoring Workspace

Workspace monitoring is a Microsoft Fabric database that collects and organizes logs and metrics from various Fabric elements in the workspace. It allows users to access and analyze logs and metrics related to Fabric elements.

Therefore, its main function is to allow users to query the database, with the objective of obtaining information about the usage and performance of their workspace.

    Its main elements are:

    Monitoring

The monitoring feature creates an Eventhouse database in your workspace that collects and organizes logs and metrics from Fabric elements. Collaborators in this workspace can query the database for more information about the performance of their Fabric elements:

    • Security: Workspace monitoring is a secure read-only database that can only be accessed by workspace users with at least one collaborator role.
    • Data collection: Eventhouse collects diagnostic logs and metrics from Fabric elements in the workspace. The data is aggregated and stored in the monitoring database, where it can be queried via KQL or SQL. This supports both historical log analysis and real-time data transmission.
    • Access: Once the database is accessed, query sets and dashboards can be created and saved to simplify data exploration.

    Operations registration

After installing workspace monitoring, we also find the option to query the following logs:

    • Data Engineering (GraphQL)
    • Real-Time Intelligence Eventhouse Monitoring
    • Reflected Database
    • Power BI

    Sample queries and templates

Other features include sample queries or the option to monitor the workspace through Power BI reports and real-time dashboard templates, available in the dashboards tab.

How to use the Fabric Monitoring Hub

The Microsoft Fabric monitoring center allows users to monitor platform activities from a central location.

Any Fabric user can use the monitoring center, but it only displays the activities of items that you have permission to view.

This monitoring center displays the activities of the following elements:

    • Data pipelines
    • Data flows
    • Datamarts
    • Datalake warehouses
    • Notebooks
    • Semantic models
    • Spark job definitions

    Visualization and interaction

    • To open the monitoring center in Fabric, simply select “Monitoring center” from the navigation panel. This displays the information in a table, and the Fabric activities are displayed according to their start time, with the most recent activities at the top.
    • Each Fabric item shows a maximum of 100 activities, and the history is kept for 30 days and can be viewed using the “History View” option.
    • You can also change the display order of the table by selecting each column heading. The table will be sorted according to the selection, and the arrow next to the column heading indicates the sorting criteria.
    • To configure table columns, select “Column options” to add, remove, and rearrange the columns displayed in the table.
    • You can also use the keyword search text box to search for specific activities based on their activity name. But note that the search is performed on the loaded data, not on all activities in the database.
    • Use the “Filter” button to filter the results, as well as use a combination of any of the following options: status, item type, sent by, or location.
    • If the appropriate permissions are given for the Fabric item shown in the table, it is possible to do certain actions depending on the type of item being reviewed.

Fabric Admin Monitoring Workspace: Aspects to Consider

The administrator monitoring workspace is a specialized environment designed for Fabric administrators to monitor and manage workloads, usage, and governance within their tenant. With the resources available in the workspace, administrators can perform tasks such as security audits, performance monitoring, capacity management, and more.

The administrator monitoring workspace is automatically installed the first time an administrator accesses it, and the workspace reports appear blank until the first data refresh. This refresh begins approximately five minutes after the workspace installation and is usually completed within minutes.

To activate the installation of the administrator monitoring workspace, follow these steps:

    • Log in to Fabric as an administrator.
    • From the navigation menu, select “Workspace”.
    • Select “Administrator Oversight”.

Once configured, administrators can share all workspace reports with non-administrators via the workspace role. And they can also share individual reports or semantic models with non-administrator users via links or direct access.

By default, the administrator monitoring workspace is licensed Pro. To take advantage of capacity benefits, such as unlimited content sharing, follow these steps:

    • Go to the administration portal.
    • Then go to the “Workspaces” page in the administration portal.
    • Using the filter in the “Name” column, search for “Administrator supervision” and select the ‘Actions’ button, and then “Reassign workspace.
    • Select the desired license mode and click “Save”.

In a rapidly changing business environment, the ability to analyze data instantly has become a necessity, and thanks to it, companies gain the ability to monitor events in real time.

Thanks to that, you will be able to react quickly to changes and solve potential problems. And at Plain Concepts, we help you get the most out of it.

We offer you a Microsoft Fabric Adoption Framework with which we will evaluate the technological and business solutions, we will make a clear roadmap for the data strategy, we visualize the use cases that will make the difference in your company, we take into account the sizing of equipment, time and costs, we study the compatibility with existing data platforms and we migrate Power BI, Synapse and Datawarehouse solutions to Fabric.
